Scotland’s household photovoltaic installed capacity surges 174% in 2023

Feb 06, 2024

The UK Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) said on January 25 that the number of small photovoltaic systems installed in Scotland would increase by 174% in 2023 compared with 2020.

A total of nearly 26,000 PV panels will be installed in Scotland in 2023, a 174% increase compared to more than 9,000 PV panels installed in 2020. This is the highest year ever for the MCS certification program.

The agency confirmed in December that 2023 would be the biggest year ever for the installation of renewable energy and heating facilities in the UK, with a total of 220,500 MCS-certified renewable energy generation facilities registered in 2023.

Scottish Government grants for homeowners and renters, which fund up to 75% of energy efficiency improvements, and advice from Home Energy Scotland are playing a key role in driving this growth.
