Philippines: 2GW of new photovoltaic capacity is expected in 2024

Jun 05, 2024

Recently, according to data from the Philippine Department of Energy, the Philippines will launch nearly 2GW of solar power generation capacity in 2024. The country's Department of Energy expects that 1.98GW of solar power generation capacity will be connected to the grid this year, which is part of 4.2GW of renewable energy projects.

The department said that by June, the Philippines may launch 966MW of solar power generation capacity, of which 495MW of solar power generation capacity is already in the commissioning stage. The renewable energy capacity target also includes 590MW of battery storage capacity, and 32.42MW of capacity is currently in operation.
The Department of Energy said that these devices are expected to help strengthen the reliability and stability of the grid while preventing insufficient supply and potential power outages. Energy Secretary Raphael P.M.Lotilla called on government agencies to "actively engage with energy project developers, prioritize the issuance of licenses, and promptly resolve priority issues to facilitate the seamless implementation of energy projects."
According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, by the end of 2023, the Philippines had deployed 1.7GW of photovoltaic installed capacity. Earlier this year, Solar Philippines, a Philippine solar company, began building a solar array that is scheduled to be completed in 2026, when the country’s installed solar capacity will reach 4GW.
